This Week in Mormonism – May 6rd 2011

May 06, 2011 in TWiM

I have researched this issue and realized this below:

Significant details & problems that most LDS are not aware of.

The LDS Church did not always have the name “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”.

On April 6, 1830, LDS church leaders met together presumably to fulfill the requirements of the laws of the land, and they named their church consistent with the admonition of the Book of Mormon, “The Church of Christ.”

On May 3, 1834, Joseph Smith, as moderator, made a motion to change the name of the church to, “The Church of the Latter Day Saints,” which was adopted by unanimous vote (The Evening and Morning Star, vol. 2, no. 20, p. 160, May 1834; History of the Church 2:62).  He took CHRIST right out of the name!

Four years later, on April 26, 1838, it was again changed to “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints” and has remained thus since.  (The hyphen in ‘Latter-day’ was add about a century or so later to be grammatically correct).

The chronology of the name is:

1830:  Church of Christ
1834:  The Church of the Latter Day Saints
1838: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

Why did Joseph change the Name of the Church after God already told him 4 years before what to name it?  ”In June, 1829, the Lord gave us the name by which we must call the church, being the same as He gave the Nephites.  We obeyed His commandment, and called it The Church of Christ until 1834, when, through the influence of Sydney Rigdon, the name of the church was changed to The Church of the Latter Day Saints, dropping out the name of Christ entirely…” (An Address to All Believers In Christ Whitmer, p. 73).  Now to be called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).

The following photograph of the Kirtland temple still bears the name ‘The Church of the Latter day Saints‘.1

I am wondering why the name change?

In an article from The Salt Lake Tribune dated 06/10/2008 and titled “Mormon and Black: Grappling with a racist past”.  I read the story of a new bride in The Salt Lake City Temple. There was an elderly man who saw Tamu Smith, the new bride, and asked aloud:

. . .  what is a Ni**er was doing there.

But instead of chastise this man the Temple workers defended him, saying he didn’t know better.

This was fifteen years after the June 8th Revelation mind you, in the very same Temple where that Revelation came out of.

Now, I don’t believe every word that come from within the church but I believe that there are some really great people that attend. Just as I believe that there are some really great and good people that don’t attend.

Latte Day Saints 11-03-08

I have been kinda busy lately and this is the reason I haven’t posted in 2 months. Work, family, callings, etc. I have been called to and accepted a calling in the Elders Quorum Presidency. And yes I am freaking out.

To all the Latte Day Saints out there . . . . hang in there . . . . I will be posting every week now.

Naomi: Yes, I will be posting again. Thank’s for asking. And thank’s for the concern.

It is true. I don’t get that excitement as a 11 Year Old Leader any longer. It’s the parents mostly. I have been a leader for over a year and just last week found that I should be meeting with the Primary President. I’ve never even talked to her. And yes we’ve been in the same room at the same time. And because of the lack of leadership (Cub Master was also the 11 year old assistant for months), the nex 11 year old will be going to another ward.

I have to remind myself that I am doing this for free, on my own. This is Preparation of the Preparatory Priesthood. How must more important can that be.

Yes it Begs the Question. Check out the site Beg the Question for more information.

Begging the question is in which the proposition to be proved is assumed implicitly or explicitly in one of the premises and nothing else. It does not mean to raise a question.

I was sitting in Gospel Doctrine when thoughts of Noah’s Arc came to mind. If Africans were denied the Priesthood and access to Temples for being inferior, then why where Black People allowed on the Ark?
